DISTRIBUTION
Recently, the Section on Great Apes of the IUCN's Primate Specialist Group compiled all the current range and distribution data for chimpanzees inhabiting Nigeria and adjacent parts of Cameroon (map [jpg,571kb] courtesy of IUCN and UNEP-WCMC). The core range of ellioti chimpanzees occurs in the region straddling the Nigeria-Cameroon Border. However, chimpanzees occur in several locations in southwestern and central Cameroon, north of the Sanaga river. Chimpanzees are least numerous in western Nigeria, where as few as 250 may remain.

Fine scale distribution maps of chimpanzees in Cameroon and Nigeria are posted below. Please contact us if you have corrections or updates.
